New signs were installed in Biddenham this week to mark the route of the village’s ‘Coffin Path’.  Those using the route, which leads to the historic Biddenham Village Pond, will be guided by two signs at each end of the Coffin Path situated on Gold Lane and behind the Church. 

The signs were designed and installed by Bedford Borough Council and were purchased by Bromham & Biddenham Ward Councillors Roger Rigby and Jon Gambold at a cost of £360 from their Council Ward Funds.

The new signs follow the recent news that Heritage Lottery Funding has been awarded to the village to launch the Biddenham Heritage Trail in 2015.  The Heritage Trail will include the Village Pond, which was formed in 1700 by Sir William Boteler and his wife Elizabeth to provide a supply of carp for Biddenham Manor.

Cllr Rigby said:

‘The Coffin Path is a scenic route that takes in the village’s Norman Church.  The route leads to the Biddenham Village Pond which has become an important part of village life for local residents and school children due to its setting and abundance of wildlife.

‘Cllr Gambold and I hope the new signs will preserve and enhance this historic route for use by Biddenham residents and visitors to the village ahead of the launch of the Biddenham Heritage Trail next year.’
